Losing or finding a pet can be overwhelming, and time matters. This page offers trusted resources, tips, and local contacts to guide you through what to do next. While we can’t guarantee results, these tools have helped many families reunite with their pets — and we hope they’ll help you, too.

My Pet is Lost

  • File a lost pet report with the local non emergency police department as well as in neighboring towns
  • File a lost pet report with Lake County Animal Care and Control or call them at 847-377-4700
  • Post in local lost pets Facebook groups, such as:
  • Post in neighborhood groups/apps such as Next Door
  • Report to PetFBI
  • If they are microchipped, notify the chip company
  • Contact local shelters/vets
  • If the animal is spotted, make sure not to chase them or search in large groups of people, often times they are in fight or flight mode
  • When searching, start further away from where they were lost and work towards the location they were lost
  • When posting flyers ensure to give them to delivery drivers such as your postal worker
  • When providing descriptions ensure to include approximate age, color, if they are altered, and if they are chipped, along with any identifying markings
  • For smaller animals check in garages, window wells, and under decks
  • If need be, contact professional search organizations that use drones to help locate missing pets. Local companies include: Dog Gone Pet Recovery (224) 308-628, Smithic Air (630) 673-3213, or Best Furry Friend Search and Rescue (815) 404-9060. These referrals are based on positive word of mouth. We haven’t personally vetted them, so please use your own judgment.
