"How Much is that Doggie in the Window?" Pet Protection Day at The Glen Orphans of the Storm Benefit Dinner 2006 Lake County Vaccination Clinic Holiday Wrapping with the Orphans The Good Neighbor Project ![]() ![]() ![]() |
The Good Neighbor Project If you drive by Orphans of the Storm you will see our Good Neighbor Project taking shape. The berms and their plantings are looking green and inviting to the public. Just a few final touches and the project is complete. But just what is The Good Neighbor Project? Project Statement: Building on our existing good neighbor policy, we take responsibility for our place in the community through a detailed plan of Grounds Beautification and Sound Abatement. These improvements will better allow us to evolve with our community, continue our mission with less impact on our neighbors and improve the overall shelter experience.
We call this plan our Good Neighbor Project. With this project, the animal shelter's first facilities improvement in 15 years, we endeavor to upgrade our facilities significantly to benefit the communities we serve, our neighbors and friends in the Village of Riverwoods, the visiting public and, of course, our animal community. Following a generous grant from the Ruth Spitzbart Estate, we undertook this beautification and sound abatement improvement project which includes steep, sweeping berms, wider concrete walkways, retaining walls framing our yards, beautiful wood fencing and generous numbers of evergreens and other plantings. The benefits of this project are many. Our neighbors will hear less sound coming from the shelter. Orphans' animals will be noticeably calmer as visual contact with the busy Riverwoods Road will be blocked. Access to the shelter from our visitor's parking lot will be easier and safer. For our neighbors and friends passing by, we are providing beautiful and pleasant greenery and other landscaping in place of views of chain link fencing. Perhaps the most important aspect will be to dispel the common myth that adopting a shelter animal is a depressing experience. We intend that word-of-mouth will continue to spread that adopting a shelter animal at Orphans of the Storm is a positive experience in a positive environment and that one is saving a life while improving one's own.
